For those who think it can’t get any hotter this summer – hold on because it’s Tall City Blues Fest time today and Saturday in Midland.

The annual event is an original American music festival with award-winning talent and has become a signature event for downtown Midland, according to the group’s website.

The Fest is presented by Downtown Midland Management District and draws thousands of people downtown every summer to soak up the sounds of authentic American music. In addition to a line-up of 22 performers this year, the full festival experience includes educational workshops, a silent art auction, vendors and more.

“As a team, we believe in bold ideas and striving to be remarkable. We love creating cool things worth doing that contribute to other people and feel a responsibility to do our part in making the community a better place,” co-creator and producer of the Fest Lisa Grissom said via the website at tallcitybluesfest.com

This year’s lineup includes Lil’ Ed & The Blues Imperials as the featured act.

The Chicago Sun-Times reviewed the group: “Lil’ Ed & The Blues Imperials are the hottest purveyors of bottleneck boogie to come out of Chicago since Hound Dog Taylor.”

The group has played together for more than 30 years and combines deep blues string bending, along with rough-edged and soulful vocals. Lil’ Ed & The Blues Imperials have released 10 albums and appeared on the Conan O’ Brien show and their accolades and awards include the Living Blues award for Best Live Performer in 2011, 2012 and 2013, as well as a Blues Music Award for Band of the Year in 2007 and 2009.

This year, they are nominated for the Band of the Year, and frontman Lil’ Ed, received a nomination for B.B. King Entertainer of the Year, both by the Blues Music Awards.

A number of other acts including Chubby Carrier & the Bayou Swamp Band, Pierce Dipner, Allie Rohrer, Trey Wanvig, Nakia, Sarah Grace, Vin Mott, Erin Harpe, Ben Rice, Akeem Kemp and others will perform during the two day event.

The event is not just about live performances. This year on Saturday Midland College will partner with Tall City Blues Fest to host eight workshops taught by artists performing during the Blues Fest weekend in downtown Midland. All workshops will be held inside the Doubletree by Hilton Hotel at 117 West Wall St.

“What I love about our workshop series are the small classes which allows for hands-on learning and personal attention for the participants,” Grissom said via news release.

The Blues Fest workshops will be held throughout the day. The cost is $15 per workshop, if registered prior to the event or $20 at the door. “We continue to be grateful to the Tall City Blues Fest for donating the proceeds from the workshops to support scholarships for Kids’ College,” said Brenda Cordero, associate director of Community Programs Continuing Education at Midland College. “Proceeds from this year’s workshops will assist children in Kids’ College 2020.”
