BRASWELL: Friends we need

By Dr. Jimmy Braswell

Chaplain, Home Hospice of Odessa

While I was sick with COVID in August, my daughter decided I needed something to watch on TV.

She knew I was an old Star Trek fan from the 60’s, and so she told me to watch a spin-off of Star Trek on Netflix called “Discovery.”

As I watched it, I thought nothing could beat the old series and criticized the series as “overacting” and a space “daytime drama.”

I told her it was all about relationships and not the storyline. She told me that was the point. At the end of the series, there was a quote from Gene Roddenberry about how we are all on what seems to be an alien planet and what we need to bring meaning and goodness to our lives is two friends who really understand us and we can talk to.

That is really what Christianity is all about. Two good friends. One, the Lord Jesus, who can never fail us or leave us; and, the other the church, the Body of Christ.

With the church we bond and have fellowship with each other. Together we tell the rest of the world the significant story of help and hope in Christ and the church. These two “good friends” will be with us forever as we go through this world and as we enter into the next, never to be alone and to be understood and listened to. These two friends brought me through the fears and trouble of illness and will continue to do so through Eternity.

Renew those two relationships! (Romans 12: 10-13)
