CENTERS PIECE: Tips for Becoming Ageless

How many times have we known someone who is just “ageless”?  They look the same as they did twenty years ago, but have updated their styles, and have the energy as a teenager.  These people who appear ageless have some formula that they follow and here are some of their ageless tips:

Reframe the term Aging.  Aging generally refers to deterioration and decline.  We cannot avoid getting older, but aging is optional.  Pay attention to the words you use when you speak about growing older and perhaps attach new meanings to those words.  Be careful what you say about older people, because you will be there before you know it!

Age Proof Yourself NOW.  It is never too late to take care of your physical body.  You start the aging process the minute you are born!  Many aging effects begin in childhood.  For example, loss of muscle mass begins as early as the twenties, if you sit all day.  It’s never too late to begin some exercise program.  You do not have to go to a gym:   just walk, do some gentle stretching, carry in some groceries, and keep good habits.  Also, do not smoke or drink alcohol to excess.  Nicotine and alcohol really add to the aging process and takes their toll on the body.  Plus, upgrade your diet.  Cut out processed food, preservatives, and chemical additives.  Drink more water!  Also, do not forget to wear sunscreen all year round.

Stop Thinking Negatively about Age.  If you tell yourself you are old, you will be old.  Have positive self-talk and believe it.  Get out of those negative patterns of thinking: “I can’t do that, because I am too old.”  Your body will start to believe your negative thoughts and will start to feel “old.”  I looked forward to my 55th birthday because some of the “Senior Discounts” start at that age!  My Mother would not admit to being 65 until she was 75 and I pointed out all the discounts she was missing out on over those years.  My uncle had a great quote, “I stopped lying about my age and started bragging about it.”  You are only as old as you believe. 

Resolve to “Get Younger” This Year.  There is a huge difference between your chronologic age (the age on your driver’s license) and your biologic age (the age of your cells).  Lifestyle changes made now can literally “reverse the clock” on aging; you can be biologically younger.  By practicing a healthy lifestyle, you can add years to your life by looking and acting younger.

You can take free nutrition classes at Casa de Amigos, Midland Memorial Hospital, or the Senior Centers (for those at least 65 years old).  If you like a group setting, there are many exercise classes that do not cost much.  Water aerobics and/or yoga classes are great for any age.  Also, there are a wealth of classes online that you can access for free (with the internet).  If not, go check out an exercise video at the Library. 

Update your Beliefs.  What do you believe about getting older?  Do you believe that an active lifestyle stops with retirement?  My parents were more active and involved in activities and volunteer work after retirement than they ever were before.  Their friends used to call me to ask where they were at any particular time.  My Mother wore 3” and 4” stiletto heels beautifully until she died at 88 years old!  Change those beliefs that you cannot go to college/ go skydiving/ run a marathon after “a certain age.”  You age is not a number but rather a belief!
