MISSION FITNESS: Add a little more motivation to your workout with music

During hectic days full of work, school and family duties it is not always easy to go the gym and have an energetic and effective workout. Sometimes, we could use a little help.

There is an external source of motivation that has been seen in fitness facilities for years: music. If you can think back to the days of homemade workout videos — jazzercise, and Tae-Bo — what are all the things they had in common? Each instructor would use music that was loud, up-tempo and full of life. According to Dr. Costas Karageorghis, “music can reduce the perception of effort significantly, and increase endurance by much as 15 percent.” During the past 20 years his research has concluded that music has three primary influences on exercise.

1. The tendency to move in time with synchronous sound.

  • When an individual is listening to a certain song, the tempo of the beat is described in beats per minute, which is the same term used to describe the tempo at which the heart beats as well.
  • If we are performing an exercise that is of high-intensity, such as Burpees, it would benefit the user to select a song that would match the higher rate of our pulse (120-150 BPM) such as “Starships” by Nicki Minaj.

2. The tendency and preference of music to increase energy.

  • If we are listening to a song that is particularly fast in tempo and energetic, we are more likely to get up and move rather than remain still and stagnant. The listener may feel a jolt of energy and motivation if they were to hear song that they find particularly energetic and inspiring.
  • For example, if he/she has seen the movie “Rocky” and they find the song “Eye of the Tiger” particularly inspiring they may feel invigorated and full of energy. These feelings normally increase the likelihood of a successful and effective workout.
  • Increasing your energy is a product of improving your mood. Music can help you focus on your goals and zone out while participating in a workout. It can be used as a tool to help you escape from reality and focus on the positivity of what your workout is going to help you accomplish in the long run.

3. The tendency for music to distract the exerciser from discomfort.

  • Sometimes an exercise session can become very difficult, especially toward the end. Our bodies are a miraculous example of science and ingenuity. It is made to endure work, pain and other trauma. However, after a certain time frame and amount of work, our energy systems begin to fail and we look for an external means of energy to complete our workout. Music is an amazing source to do just that.
  • Songs that consist of a faster tempo require our brains to process more information. This will distract away some of the attention from the physical demands our bodies are currently undergoing through exercise.

Life may drain us sometimes and make it difficult for us to feel energetic enough for us to exercise. However, there is a source of motivation out there for us to take advantage of. It is cost-effective, easy to use and healthy for our mind.
