Local dentists and orthodontists will be offering several free services to eligible veterans next week.

The Laser Smile Center will host five dentists and orthodontists on a first-come, first-serve basis from 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Nov. 9 at 2478 E. 11th St. in Odessa.

Stephanie Rangel, who is the office manager at The Laser Smile Center, said they hope to serve around 50 veterans. Available services include exams, x-rays, preventative care, cleanings, fillings and oral surgery.

“That’s going to be a full day,” she said. “We don’t want to turn anyone away, but at some point we have to put an end to it for the day. It’s a one-day event, but it doesn’t mean that we won’t do it again.

“We don’t want anyone to walk away feeling like we wasted their time, but I can only hold these doctors there for so long. I want it to be a positive experience for the patients and the doctors and their staff.”

The five dentists and orthodontists that will all practice at The Laser Smile Center are Dr. Mark Rangel, Dr. Steve W. Cobb, Dr. George Hilal, Dr. Franklin Boyles and Dr. Carson Phillips.

About a year ago, Dr. Mark Rangel and Stephanie Rangel moved from Abilene to Odessa.

The husband and wife duo purchased The Laser Smile Center in October of 2017 and six weeks after they bought the building a fire broke out — totaling everything. The Laser Smile Center remodeled its building and reopened in July.

Prior to the fire, Stephanie Rangel wanted to make a positive impression on the community with free dental care to eligible veterans. That plan was put on hold until the remodel was complete and now the idea is coming to fruition.

“For Dr. Cobb to open up his practice and allow us to see patients while we were going through our remodeling and for Dr. Boyles and his wife to reach out to us for any assistance that we needed,” Stephanie Rangel said. “Truly, it has been a blessing.”

Rangel said there will be a screening process prior to each veteran’s appointment.

The requirements for eligible veterans are they can’t have heart problems or stints put in over the last 12 months. No artificial joints put in over the last 12 months. They need to bring a list of medications. They will also need a military ID or a DD Form 214.
