LETTER TO THE EDITOR: Highlighting Prop A

The foundation of an engaged and educated community is a strong public school system. The promise of an even better future for our children is rooted in robust public schools. We as Texans have a constitutional obligation to support the “maintenance of an efficient system of public free schools.” That is why, as a mother, a resident of Ector County and a proud West Texan, and I support ECISD.

You have the opportunity to support ECISD and its bond propositions on Election Day, Saturday May 7.

I want to highlight ECISD Proposition A. So much talk and debate has centered on Prop B, I’m afraid we’re losing sight of Prop A.

Proposition A would do three things: fund maintenance and repairs across the school district, finance technology upgrades across the district, and fund a new Career and Technical Education Center. Prop A would benefit every one of the more than 31,000 students educated through ECISD. Close to 70% of the $215 million Prop A is requesting would pay for necessary repairs and need technology upgrades across the district. Every campus in ECISD would see some benefit. Every child and teen in ECISD would see a positive impact from Prop A.

I voted in favor of ECISD. Through Proposition A, I voted to fund the needed repairs in my daughter’s elementary school, and in every other elementary, middle, and high school across Ector County.

I hope our community continues to invest in our future by supporting our public schools. And specifically, if you are a parent, grandparent, or friend to any one of the more than 31,000 students in ECISD, I urge you to continue to invest in the child you love and our shared future by funding the school district’s needed repairs through Prop A.

Like most, I do not like paying higher property taxes. But what I despise more, is the thought that my daughter and every other school child in our district will not have the facilities and educational foundation needed to have a brighter future.
