COLLEGE STATION Wink’s C.J. Mercier had his bid for a second tennis state title come one match short.

Mercier fell in the finals of 2A boys singles 6-0, 6-1 to Olton’s Robert Marshall on Friday at Texas A&M Univeristy.

Mercier, a junior, advanced to the title match after picking up two wins on Thursday against players from Sabinal and Bosqueville.

The Wildcat tennis player was looking for a second goal medal after teaming up with Donavan Garcia last year to capture the 1A boys doubles title.

Marshall advanced to the final with a win against Bosqueville as well along with defeating a player from Mason.

>> SECOND SILVER: Last year, Ethen Evans was a step away from winning a state tennis championship. That bid fell one match short when Evans and his doubles partner Dekota Bustamantes fell to Garcia and Mercier in the 1A boys doubles title match.

Evans again found himself in a final, this time with Kathleen Sheehan in the 1A mixed doubles final.

The result was the same however as Evans and Sheehan dropped the title match Sofia Rodriguez and Hudson Springer of Leakey.

Evans and Sheehan played well Thursday, earning a pair of wins over teams from Knippa and Iredell to get the title shot.

Both Longhorn seniors will continue their athletic careers at the next level with Sheehan set to play tennis for Eastern Arizona College, while Evans will head to Northwestern Oklahoma State to play football.

>> JUST SHORT: Crane’s duo of Meagan King and Lindsey Richards fought through a tough match in the 3A girls doubles final, but came up on the losing end to Sonora’s Sky Jennings and Peyton Matthews 6-4, 7-6 (4).

King and Richards were by far the toughest test for the champs from Sonora who only dropped one game in two matches on Thursday to make their way to the championship match.

The Lady Bird pair also had little trouble advancing to the final, beating teams from Leonard and Vanderbilt Industrial in straight sets.
