The driver of the pickup truck that collided with an Ector County ISD school bus was identified Wednesday as 50-year-old Jonathan Dodson of Odessa, according to a release from the Texas Department of Public Safety.

The release from DPS spokeswoman Trooper Elena Viramontes reported Dodson ran a stop sign as he headed south on Mercury Avenue at about 8:19 a.m. and collided with an ECISD school bus that reportedly carried 18 students from Crocket Junior High and Odessa High School.

Dodson’s pickup reportedly struck the left side of the bus, pushing the bus into a fence. He was not wearing his seat belt and was ejected.

Dodson, school bus driver Barbara Knott and three students were taken by ambulance to Medical Center Hospital. One of the students, Jonathan Gonzales, was flown to a Lubbock hospital after reportedly suffering a head injury. Another six students were brought to the hospital by their parents.

The identities of the three children that were transported to the Medical Center Hospital by Odessa Fire and Rescue were confirmed by DPS on Thursday afternoon: Jonathan Gonzales, 15; Maria Delgado, 17; and Alexis Gruiz, 14.

All have been treated and released from the hospital. Dodson was reportedly released on Wednesday.

Viramontes’ release, three days after the wreck, did not say whether troopers issued any citations or filed any charges. The investigation was ongoing Thursday, she reported.

On Thursday, ECISD Superintendent Thomas Crowe said he was so amazed by the compassion of Knox, who had a severe cut on her head amid being disorientated from the wreck.

"She still was helping the children and not thinking of herself," Crowe said. "It's that kind of stuff that gives me hope about ECISD. It says a lot about this community."
