Two boys are still recovering from a fatal crash Wednesday near 87th Street and Andrews Highway that killed their mother.

Matias Tovar, 6, was listed in critical condition and his younger brother Mateo Tovar, 2, was in stable condition Thursday, Odessa Police Department spokesman Cpl. Steve LeSueur said.

The two brothers were transported to Medical Center Hospital and then air lifted to University Medical Center in Lubbock following the two-vehicle collision that killed 36-yearold Maylin Gabriela Melo Perez of Odessa Wednesday afternoon in north Odessa.

The fatal collision happened at 3:30 p.m. near the intersection of 87th Street and Andrews Highway, an OPD news release stated.

“We do have a federal safety grant program to install a traffic signal at that intersection in 2020,” Texas Department of Transportation spokesperson Gene Powell said. “It will make it easier for people on feeder roads to get onto (Highway) 385.”

Perez, 36, was driving a silver Toyota 4Runner west on 87th Street with her sons when she ran a stop sign and failed to yield the right of way, the release stated.

Martina Nabarrete Banuelos, 54, was driving a black H2 Hummer north on Andrews Highway when the Hummer collided with the 4Runner. Perez was pronounced dead at the scene and next of kin were notified.

Banuelos was transported to MCH with non-life-threatening injuries.

The investigation continues.
