Texas Department of Transportation is launching “Share the Road: Look Twice for Motorcycles” which is a campaign that will support May’s National Motorcycle Safety Awareness Month.

“Last year motorcycle fatalities were reduced by 17%, which is a big step forward; still one death is too many for the Lone Star State,” TxDOT Executive Director James Bass said in a press release. “As motorcyclists hit the road to enjoy the open air and beautiful scenery, it’s important that vehicle drivers and motorcyclists remain alert and look out for each other on the road. We want everyone to enjoy what Texas offers and reach their destinations safely.”

Throughout 2018, there was an average of at least one motorcyclist that died each day on Texas roadways. There were 417 motorcyclists who died, while 1,920 were seriously injured, the release stated.

The release detailed one of the common crashes for motorcyclists and drivers is when a driver make a left turn at intersection due to the driver’s difficulty judging the distance and speed of motorcycles. The release stated that 30% of Texas motorcycles deaths in 2018 happened at an intersection.

TxDOT is asking drivers to look twice for motorcycles, especially at intersections, always assume motorcycles are closer than they appear to be and avoid turning in front of an oncoming motorcycle and use turn signals and check blind spots before changing lanes. TxDOT also asks drivers to maintain a safe following distance, give motorcyclists a full lane, especially when passing and obey posted speed limits.
