An Odessa woman died Thursday night after being hit by a vehicle while trying to walk across 42nd Street.

Connie Suzanne Hughes, 49, attempted to walk north across 42nd Street without using a crosswalk and was hit by a Jeep Patriot, an Odessa Police Department news release stated.

Odessa police and Odessa Fire Rescue responded to the call at about 8:04 p.m. in 1100 block of West 42nd Street. Investigation revealed a black 2012 Jeep Patriot being driven by 27-year-old Shelly Long of Odessa was traveling east when her vehicle hit Hughes, the release stated.

Hughes was pronounced dead at the scene. Next of kin have been notified. There were no reports of any other injuries, the release stated.

Both westbound and eastbound lanes on 42nd Street were shut down between West County Road and Golder Avenue for several hours. The investigation continues.
