Wanda Peterson was getting ready to attend an awards ceremony where her daughter would be commemorated when she heard a loud boom.

“My daughter said, ‘Momma, your car … it’s across the street,’ ” Peterson said as she carried belongings from her 1998 Chevrolet Cavalier.

According to Cpl. Ben Hernandez, about 6 p.m. Tuesday 33-year-old Jorge Contreras was driving south in outside lane in the 3900 block of Tanglewood Lane when he gradually drifted toward the curb.

He struck Peterson’s parked car sending the car across the street, while his Ford F-150 fell onto its side leaving the man pinned, Hernandez said.

Fire Chief Kavin Tinney said the fire department cut open the front windshield and used air bags to lift the pickup off of Contreras’ arm.

“He was bleeding profusely,” Tinney said. “His arm got pinned under the truck and back.”

Contreras was taken to Medical Center Hospital and remained in fair condition, but Hernandez thinks it could have easily been worse.

“The pressure of the truck kept him from bleeding to death,” he said. No citations had been issued at press time.
