The Alzheimer’s Association West Texas Chapter is hosting its annual Education Conference, Healthy Living: Pathway to Hope, from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. June 20 in the Carrasco Room at Midland College.

By 2020, it is estimated that 400,000 Texans will be diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease. To increase community awareness and education about the disease, the Alzheimer’s Association is hosting the educational conference for caregivers, professionals and the community at large. The conference focuses on lifestyle choices such as nutrition, physical activity, stress management, sleep, compassion fatigue, the healing power of humor and the impact these choices can have on dementia.

Keynote speaker, Dr. Padmaja Patel is board certified in lifestyle medicine and internal medicine. Patel serves as medical director of Midland Health’s Lifestyle Medicine Center.

Patel will speak on lifestyle as a means to reduce the risk of developing Alzheimer’s and other dementias.

“The conference is for anyone who is a caregiver for someone with Alzheimer’s disease or other dementia, or anyone who would like to better understand the disease,” Janet Cross, program coordinator with the Alzheimer’s Association West Texas Chapter, said. “The conference will focus on healthy lifestyle choices with presentations on physical activity, stress management, nutrition, humor, and sleep. We are looking forward to hearing from all of our distinguished speakers.”

There is no charge for this event. Continuing education credits are available. There is a $20 fee to Midland College for the continuing education. Cross said via phone that attendees are asked to register online as they are providing lunch and need a headcount. Visit alz.org/westtexas.
