Local farmers markets are returning this summer, with several dates set from June through September.

The Sewell Family of Companies will kick off the farmers market season at Parks Legado Town Center from 8 a.m. to noon on June 8. Other dates include July 13, Aug. 10 and Sept. 14. Vendor application is available at the Parks Legado website until April 30.

Medical Center Hospital will also be bringing back its annual farmers market for its sixth year, with its first scheduled opening on June 22 at the corner of Second Street and Alleghaney Avenue. The MCH farmers market will also be open this year on July 27, Aug. 24 and Sept. 28.

The farmers market offers locals a chance to sample locally-grown produce and other products from local vendors in the Permian Basin and help support local farmers and the agriculture industry. So far, MCH Spokesperson Susan Thorton said the farmers market has been a success.

“The community has really embraced it and I actually think there have been other groups that have thought about farmers markets themselves, because they see how well it’s been received and they realize the value of it too,” Thorton said.

There is a value provided by the market, Thorton said, not only through the support it gives to local vendors and food producers, but by providing the community with the opportunity to purchase freshly grown local items, which they may not have access to otherwise. Also planned at the event are cooking demonstrations, kids activities and live music.

In addition to fresh fruits and vegetables, Thorton said they will have local honey, jams and jellies, as well as bakers providing freshly baked goods, all grown and made in Texas. And it can help provide some healthier options, as well.

“Like local honey, for example, is supposed to be really good for people’s allergies,” Thorton said. “It offers the opportunity to get those things better than what’s available in the grocery store.”

Thorton said they generally have 50 to 65 vendors at the farmers market.
