The 27th Annual Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive will provide assistance to people nationwide who are struggling with hunger.

The West Texas Food Bank has partnered with the United States Postal Service and the National Association of Letter Carriers for the event, which is the country’s largest single-day food drive.

The Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive will be held on Saturday and more than 200,000 letter carriers will collect food donations as they deliver mail along their postal routes.

Letter carriers collected about 71.6 million pounds of food donations along their postal routes last year, a WTFB press release stated, which brought the total since NALC's food drive began in 1993 to more than 1.67 billion pounds.

Donations collected this weekend will be distributed to local food banks, pantries, shelters and churches.

Some residents may receive a branded Stamp Out Hunger Bag in the mail this week that non-perishable foods such as canned soup, canned vegetables, canned meats and fish, pasta, rice or cereal may be placed in next to their mailbox before the regular mail delivery on Saturday.

Anyone who does not receive a Stamp Out Hunger bag is still encouraged to donate by leaving items in a sturdy bag.

WTFB staff will also be at the post office on 52nd Street with volunteers from Medical Center Hospital on Saturday from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. to collect donations in person.
