With spring comes the Annual Ector County Independent School District Horticulture Program Plant Sale.

Featuring hanging baskets, petunias, geraniums, spider plants and other greenery, the event runs from April 23 through May 10. Hours are 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m., unless someone calls horticulture teacher Christina Butler to come in earlier or stay later.

The ending date depends on how long supplies last, Butler said.

About 30 students are involved in the yearly sale, held at the ECISD Greenhouse, 104 S. Grandview Ave.

“They all help out pretty well,” Butler said.

Proceeds go back into the greenhouse, which has been kept patched together through the years.

Roof repairs are going on now and the cooling pads are back on again, but they are falling out because of the wind.

“So it’s a constant battle,” Butler said.

Sophomores Stacy Grace, 15, and Angelique DeLaRosa, 16, are two of Butler’s students. Grace attends Odessa High School and DeLaRosa goes to Permian High School.

“I love being involved in horticulture. My mom’s really big on plants. That’s something that we go do on Sundays,” DeLaRosa said.

“I love being in this class,” Grace said. “I love being involved with the community and selling flowers. …”

Both students said they have learned a lot about flowers since they started in the horticulture program.

“I’ve learned that they need more than just their basic needs, which are sun, water and life. They’re almost like people: they need a lot of attention,” DeLaRosa said.

DeLaRosa said she is a “big fan” of petunias and Grace likes nearly any kind of flower.

The sale also gives students a chance to educate the public about the horticulture program, Butler said.

Asked about whether they talk to the plants, Butler said they do leave the radio on from time to time.

Grace and DeLaRosa hope to get their floral certification this summer.

Butler said they can earn level I and II certifications and work in a floral shop.

“It helps them … to go in with more experience than a regular student right out of high school. The certification looks well on a resume,” Butler added.
