Following a closed session, the Ector County ISD Board of Trustees voted 7-0 on two separate motions to approve a proposed non-renewal of a term contract for longtime elementary principal Linda Voss and Odessa High School tennis coach Josh Moore and advise them that any requested hearing will be conducted by the board of trustees.

Trustee Carol Gregg made the motion to authorize the superintendent or his designee to give Voss notice that “we have voted to propose the non-renewal of their employment contract.” Nelson Minyard seconded it.

It was the same motion for on Moore’s contract.

Voss said in an interview Monday that her Texas State Teachers Association attorney would likely appeal.

On the misdemeanor charge, her attorney John Green said in an interview Monday that an arraignment is set for April 24 and plans are to waive it and plead not guilty.

The board also approved hiring principals for Bonham, Bowie and Wilson & Young middle schools. They will start July 1.

An affidavit said Voss failed to report an indecency with a child to Child Protective Services or law enforcement within 48 hours. The charge of failure to report is a class A misdemeanor in violation of a section of the Texas Family Code. She was booked into the Ector County Detention Center Feb. 26 on the charge and released the same day on a $1,000 surety bond.

Voss started with ECISD as a teacher in 1998.

She was a counselor for one year from 2004-05, information from ECISD Communications Director Mike Adkins said.

From 2005-2011, she worked as an assistant principal at Dowling, Goliad and then Milam.

She was the principal at Blanton from 2011-13; Jordan from 2013-17; Zavala for 2017-18; and Travis this year. Her salary was $86,540.

On the middle school principals, trustees voted 7-0 to hire Judi Tarleton as the new principal for Bonham Middle School.

Current Principal James Ramage is moving to become principal at Falcon Early College High School.

Tarleton is currently the associate principal at Lee High School in Midland and previously worked as lead diagnostician and special education supervisor at ECISD, as well as assistant principal at Abell Junior High in Midland ISD.

Tarleton said she is excited to be with ECISD and be part of the team. She said she has been in education for 27 years.

“There are some really great things happening administratively and with our students (at ECISD),” Tarleton said. “There’s a lot of progress going on here and I wanted to be a part of that and be a part of the growth that is happening over in Odessa.”

Trustees voted 7-0 to hire Brian Ellington as the new principal for Bowie Middle School.

Bowie Principal Shelia Stevenson is retiring.

Ellington is currently an assistant principal at Abell Junior High in Midland. He was an assistant principal at Nimitz Junior High before that. Next year, Ellington will have been in education for 25 years.

He has worked in West Texas and Eastern New Mexico for most of his career.

“I’d worked in ECISD before and felt like it was a good opportunity to start as a head principal,” Ellington said.

In another 7-0 vote, the board voted to hire Anthony Garcia as the new principal for Wilson & Young Medal of Honor Middle School. Yolanda Gonzales is retiring.

Garcia has been with ECISD for eight years and in education for 11 years.

He is an assistant principal at Crockett Middle School and worked as an assistant principal at Odessa High School the three previous years.

Garcia said he feels he has a lot to bring to the campus in terms of leadership.

“I’m ready to accept the challenge. I see a lot of good things coming to Wilson & Young …,” Garcia said.

The board also voted 7-0 to approve contracts for the 2019-20 school year.
