Social media posts of students sitting on buckets in a Permian High School classroom went viral this week.
Ector County Independent School District has seen enrollment of 33,134 this year and Permian and Odessa high schools have enrollments of about 3,800 each, Public Information Officer Mike Adkins said.
He said that is about the same enrollment for each high school as last year.
A PHS English teacher, Madison Bolton, noted that she needed chairs and desks, but Adkins said she didn’t let any of the principals at Permian know and took the initiative to buy buckets and tables from Home Depot. He said there were 36 students in the class.
Adkins said if administration either at PHS or downtown had known about the need for desks and chairs, some desks and chairs could have been found. He added that there is money in the budget to buy the furniture.
Adkins said she was independent and creative, but “it makes the school look bad, the district look bad and the community look bad.”
