Tri-ethnic committee members reviewed the SAS Intervention Counseling Program Summary on Thursday and some weren’t pleased with what they saw.

On paper, member Gene Collins said, the program didn’t seem to be what the committee originally understood it to be.

Collins said he thought the program was started to help all black students reach their goals from when they start kindergarten to the time they reach college.

But instead, he said, it appears to be a behavioral program for any students.

“You have to go back and discuss what the original intent was,” Collins said.

Committee members agreed to address the misunderstanding in its annual tri-ethnic report to the administration later this month.

In other action, Alma Guerrero, assistant superintendent for curriculum and instruction and committee liaison, told the members Bowie Junior High would be assigned a Campus Intervention Team.

The team — expected to be in place by Aug. 27 — would be created because the Texas Education Agency gave Bowie an unacceptable campus rating for 2007. The agency requires school with that rating to be assigned a team.

Guerrero said other schools close to unacceptable ratings for this year may also have intervention teams, although it’s not mandated by the state.

“I think we are moving in the right direction,” Guerrero said.

Guerrero also mentioned that four community members had expressed interest in filling the vacant spot on the tri-ethnic committee.

The individuals are Don Byrne, Karen Wilkins, Nelson Minyard and Clayton Alred.

Hector Mendez, ECISD temporary interim superintendent, said the district trustees would vote on who would fill the empty seat.

Also, the committee tabled discussion of its annual report and an update on the desegregation court order. The committee may meet again prior to its scheduled Aug. 30 meeting.
