SAN ANTONIO It's the continuation of a tradition.

The Crane Golden Crane band stepped it up Monday afternoon at its biennial performance at the UIL State Marching Contest in San Antonio.

For Drum Major Austin Rawls, who was in the band two years ago when it placed fourth in the AA finals, today was his last chance to march in the state competition.

"It means a lot," he said. "We've been working really hard all year this year, all year last year and since the last time we came my freshman year.

"It's really hard work, and it means a lot to see the work paid off," he said.

Crane, which has made six state appearances since 1994 -- when it was a 3A school -- has a tradition of "band excellence."

"A lot of it is just importance in our school district," Daniel Todd, Crane's head band director, said. "It starts with administration and community. They want everything in Crane

to be good -- academics, athletics, music, everything. It starts there."

"The students have taken it on themselves to keep the tradition alive," he said. "It's very important to them. They don't want let down that tradition. It's very important for them to be good."

And that tradition even continues across families. Junior Ashley Shetter said she was proud to be on the field with her brother, freshman Alex Shetter.

"It's a really great honor to be able to go to state for my junior year and be able to share it with my brother," she said.

Todd and fellow band directors Alan Gregory and David Cadena said they were pleased with the Crane band’s performance Monday afternoon, too. Crane placed 10th out of 19 bands there.

"I thought our kids did a wonderful job," Todd said. "... They looked and sounded great. They were nervous. We've got a really young band, a lot of sophomores and freshmen, but I thought they came through really well, and I couldn't be prouder of them."
