To start the 2019 calendar year, Eddie Mancha was welcomed as the new chief deputy for the Ector County Sheriff’s Office.

The new chief deputy has worked for ECSO for more than 20 years.

Mancha was excited to be selected to take the reins as second in command at ECSO.

“I was very honored to be considered and surprised that the sheriff would have me fill that position,” Mancha said.

Sheriff Mike Griffis knew when former Chief Deputy Roddy Eaton was set to retire at the end of 2018, he needed to find a new right-hand deputy.

“I started thinking (after Eaton announced his retirement) who I thought would be here for the long haul whether I’m in office or not,” Griffis said. “My decision was made entirely on the good of the sheriff’s office. Eddie will be there for the long haul and do what’s right for the sheriff’s office and our community.

“I’m very fortunate that I’ve been able to work with very trustworthy and hard working guys like them. They make my job easier. They really do.”

Mancha began his peace officer career with the Midland County Sheriff’s Office as a jailer in 1990. He moved to ECSO in 1998 and continued to work as a jailer for two and half years.

He transitioned to patrol and also served in the warrant division and criminal investigation department. Mancha was promoted to sergeant in 2009 and lieutenant in 2013. He was then promoted to major in 2017 and now at his current position of chief deputy.

“I’ve been very fortunate to work with great people that have helped me get me where I am today,” Mancha said about moving up the ranks at ECSO.

Griffis was equality eager to hand down Mancha’s recent promotion.

Mancha is a native of West Texas as he was born and raised in Midland. He graduated from Robert E. Lee high School in 1986.

“I was excited for him. I really was,” Griffis said. “I’ve known Eddie his entire career and he’s always been a good employee. He’s attendance rate and work quality is great.”
