When Odessa police officer Cpl. Jared Wescoat saw a 45-year-old woman unresponsive and not breathing on her bed, he knew exactly what to do.

Wescoat had been called to the woman’s home on the afternoon of June 11 in the 1000 block of Zacatecas Avenue, where he found her unresponsive. Thanks to his CPR training, Wescoat was able to perform CPR for a few minutes, restoring her heartbeat before Odessa Fire Rescue arrived on scene to continue providing medical assistance.

Medical personnel later advised that the woman would not have lived without his quick emergency response and life-saving measures, Wescoat said, and for that service, the Odessa Police Department named Wescoat the officer of the month for June.

Wescoat said he was glad to receive the award, but said that isn’t what he does his job for. For him, life saving is just part of the job.

“Life saving has always been a part of what I’ve done,” Wescoat said. “It always feels good to know that as a person, not just as a police officer, that you helped somebody in need.”

The CPR Wescoat performed was the first time he had done so as an Odessa police officer. He learned the skill in the Odessa Police Academy, as all officers do. But Wescoat said he wasn’t nervous when he began performing CPR on the victim.

“When you’ve been in this job for a long period of time, it just comes to you,” Wescoat said. “You don’t think, you just know what to do.”

Wescoat, 34, joined the Odessa Police Academy a little less than three years ago. Prior to that, he served in the United States Army, where he went overseas four times, most of the time being stationed in Iraq, he said, and has prior police experience as a military police officer.

“I’ve always liked helping people,” Wescoat said. “I’ve always liked the adventure, the feeling of solving something, but more so the feeling you get when you’re helping an individual. It’s a calling I’ve always had.”
