Border patrol agents in Marfa seized 714 pounds of marijuana from an 18-wheeler Tuesday evening, according to a news release from the Big Bend Sector Border Patrol.

The drugs, worth $571,200, were detected in the truck’s tires by a Border Patrol dog at the Sierra Blanca Station I-10 checkpoint, the release stated. The 40-year-old driver, from Dumas, was turned over to the Drug Enforcement Administration’s El Paso Field Office for further investigation. The driver was not identified by border patrol.

The seizure followed reports of three trafficking attempts foiled by Border Patrol in the area.

The first happened during a commercial bus check at the same checkpoint around 2:30 p.m., Sunday and involved an illegal alien with 3.76 lbs. of crystal meth taped to his legs, another news release from the agency stated. Those drugs were worth $120,480.

The second happened at about 4 p.m. at the Highway 67 Checkpoint, the release stated, when agents searched a 1999 Buick LeSabre driven by a 22-year-old Indiana woman and seized 8.5 lbs. of crystal meth valued at $204,000. A dog pointed agents to the floor boards, where the meth was reportedly found.

The third happened around 9 p.m., again at Sierra Blanca, when agents and a Border Patrol canine reportedly found a bag aboard another commercial bus which contained 4.71 lbs. of heroin valued at $377,200. Agents connected the bag to a 47-year-old California man who was a passenger on the bus, the release stated.

The unidentified suspects in those cases were all turned over to the DEA.
