A 17-year-old man and his 17-year-old girlfriend were arrested after he reportedly pointed a handgun at multiple people while his girlfriend attempted to hide the gun from officers.

Zhyrion Haynes, 17, was charged with two counts of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, second-degree felony, and evading arrest or detention, a class A misdemeanor.

Anahi Gardea, 17, was charged with tampering or fabricating physical evidence with intent to impair, a third-degree felony, and assault (causing bodily injury), a class A misdemeanor.

The reported assault happened at 4:01 p.m. Sunday at the Golden Crest Apartments located at 3939 Tanglewood Lane, an Odessa Police Department affidavit detailed.

A fight reportedly broke out at the apartment complex and then moved to Blanton Elementary School, which is across the street. A person with a gun was reportedly occupying a gray Mercury Grand Marquis.

Officers arrived at the school and saw a large crowd of people in the parking lot, the affidavit stated. Officers also saw the gray Mercury Grand Marquis. Officers saw a man, later identified as Haynes, next to the vehicle.

Several women reportedly stated Haynes was the one that had the gun. Officers asked Haynes to come toward them and then he intentionally fled on foot. Haynes went south to the 4100 block of Lynbrook Avenue where officers lost visual of him.

Haynes was seen again in the alley of the Golden Crest Apartments, the affidavit detailed. He reportedly ran toward a U-haul business located at 4033 Maple Ave., where he was detained.

Two juvenile girls stated Haynes pointed a gun at them after a verbal argument broke out between them and Haynes’ girlfriend, later identified as Gardea.

One of the girls stated the argument happened after Gardea became upset when she found out Haynes was messaging one of the girls on social media, the affidavit stated. One the girls stated Haynes pointed the gun at her while at the apartment complex and the other one stated Haynes pointed the gun at her while in the school parking lot.

One of the girls also stated Gardea had pepper sprayed her while at the school parking lot, the affidavit stated. Both girls stated the gun was black with an extended magazine.

Haynes and Gardea both denied being a part of the disturbance, the affidavit detailed. Gardea reportedly denied being on the scene and that she knew nothing about a gun.

Gardea was detained and read her Miranda Warning, which she waived, the affidavit detailed. Gardea admitted she knew where the gun was located. Gardea showed officers the gun was in the bushes in the 10 block of Twin Oaks Circle.

The handgun was a Springfield Armory XD with an extended magazine, the affidavit stated.

Haynes was also read his Miranda Warning, which he reportedly waived. Haynes stated he was in possession of a gun, but denied pointing it anyone. He also stated he ran because he was “scared.”

Haynes and Gardea were arrested, charged and transported to the Ector County Law Enforcement Center. Haynes had three bonds totaling $51,000 and was still in custody as of Monday afternoon, jail record show. Gardea had two bonds totaling $11,500 and posted bail on Monday.
