Copper Key Realty owner John Herriage confirmed Thursday the old Water Wonderland has been sold and the new owner has big plans for it.

The property, he said, will open as a water park and event center. Herriage said the new owner hopes to have a portion of the park open by next spring. The owner, he added, will be using some of the existing infrastructure that’s still in good shape.

“There’s been a lot of vandalism, but there’s several things that can be refurbished,” Herriage said. “He is using some of the infrastructure, like the wave pool has some minor cracks, but it’s in good shape. There are several of the buildings that are structurally sound, again, in great shape.”

The Copper Key Realty website shows the property is located at 12300 Highway 80 East, or off of Interstate Business 20 in Midland County between Midland and Odessa. The listing shows it was built in 1980. The price of the property was listed at $695,000, but Herriage said he could not disclose how much the property sold for.

The purchaser, Fily Lozoya Sr., is the owner of G.F. Elite Real Estate Holdings, who Herriage said is a local businessman who wanted to do something for the community.

“He has several other companies in town. He is very big in the community; he likes to do stuff for the community,” Herriage said. “He has been a great client to work with, super easy to work with, you don’t get that much.”

The vacant, 16-acre water park has been closed down for about 15 years. Herriage said he’s had the listing for more than a year and they have had several other offers on the property.

“We have had other contracts on the business that have fallen through, other people were looking at leveling it and putting oil field related businesses in. He is the first that is going to put a water park and event center back in,” he said.

Herriage broke the news of the sell on his personal Facebook page and in hours it garnered massive amounts of attention. He wrote on his page, “Thank you to the awesome crew at basin abstract!! We have now closed on water wonderland it has sold! New owners says will not be oil field related! Super excited about his ideas!”

Within four hours, Herriage said there were 300 comments on his post and it was shared 719 times.

“I’m very, very happy that so many people are so positive about it,” he said.

And for those who are saying it’s going to be a pipeyard or an RV Park, Herriage said the rumors can be laid to rest.
