The track and basketball court at Purple Sage Elementary in Kermit have been supplanted by heavy machinery and piles of dirt.

Workers are preparing to begin construction on a new elementary there by the end of the year.

School officials are hoping the new elementary will be ready for students in fall 2008. At that point, the old primary and elementary schools will be razed, and construction of a new high school will begin, school board president John Bell said.

Also included in the $33 million 2006 bond project are renovations to Kermit Junior High, which have already begun, and future renovations to Walton Field, Kermit Independent School District Superintendent Santos Lujan said.

“The schools will come first,” he said.

Lujan said he met with Lubbock architects Tuesday to discuss preliminary designs of the new high school.

School board trustees will get their first look at the plans at their Aug. 14 meeting, he said.

Lujan said there is an emphasis on keeping each project within its budget.

“We’re watching our pennies,” he said.

Bell said recent rains have not hampered the elementary project, but delays could occur if rainfall continues through the start of actual construction.

He said the board hasn’t decided yet on a name for the new elementary
