The Ector County ISD Board of Trustees will receive a slate of applicants for superintendent during a special workshop meeting set for 6 p.m. Tuesday in the board room of the administration building at 802 N. Sam Houston Ave.

Hazard, Young, Attea and Associates is conducting the search for ECISD. Jim Nelson is the interim superintendent. The board named him to the position after former Superintendent Tom Crowe retired last fall.

The meeting will be held in closed session.

Nola Wellman, senior associate with Hazard, Young, Attea and Associates, said about 60 to 70 people have applied for the position.

Wellman said the candidates are from all over, not just Texas, because the board wanted a nationwide search.

She added that it’s good to have a large number of prospects to have a robust pool of candidates.

Wellman said the applicants will be narrowed to 10. She said the board would probably interview five or six of the 10.

“We’re very pleased. … I would think it will be a hard decision for the board. They will be different from each other; different strengths. It will be a challenge to narrow that down and make a final decision,” Wellman said.

Plans are to select a lone finalist in mid-April, appoint a new school chief in early May and have whoever is selected start July 1 or sooner, the district website stated.

“I’m going to trust in their ability,” Board President Doyle Woodall said. “We’re paying them to bring us the best six candidates in the nation; not just the state, the nation.”

“They haven’t given us a clue or a hint about any of them, so I’m kind of excited to see who they come up with,” Woodall added.
