MIDLAND A Sam’s Club in the middle of having its roof redone caught on fire Thursday evening, sending flames and thick smoke into the air to be seen for miles but harming no one.

Club manager Gabe Manquero said the store, at 1500 Tradewinds Blvd., Midland, would be ready for normal hours again at 7 a.m. Friday.

Midland Fire Department Interim Fire Marshal David Hickman said someone outside spotted the fire at about 6:30 p.m. and contacted people in the store. Hickman said employees activated the fire alarm and everyone inside was able to evacuate without incident.

Hickman said the first fire crews responded within about 5 minutes to find heavy smoke coming from the rooftop. Damage was contained to the auto service and tire storage sections, with minor water damage inside.

Hickman said old roofing material and debris had been on fire on the roof, which also had numerous containers full of a flammable, petroleum-based asphalt.

Hickman said Partner’s Commercial Roofing out of Houston had been working on the roof but had quit for the day at about 4:30 p.m.

The cause of the fire remained under investigation, Hickman said.
