An Odessa woman’s dying wish is to see the smiles and hear the laughter of her family.

Mary Hardin, 52, is losing her battle with cancer and living out her final days under the Hospice care of Odyssey HealthCare at Buena Vida, the nursing home where she lives.

However, Hardin still smiles at what lies ahead. The Dream Foundation granted her wish Thursday — providing her, her children and grandchildren with the means to visit Six Flags in Arlington.

Her dream was sponsored through a $500 grant from the Dream Foundation and sponsored in part by the Odyssey HealthCare Foundation of Odessa.

“Mary just wants to see her family laugh and smile and have fun on this special trip before she passes,” Eve Lechner of the Dream Foundation said. “It’s our pleasure to help her have that.”

Although Hardin can’t speak, when asked if she was excited about seeing her dream come true, she shook her head enthusiastically, tears already welling up in her eyes.

Hardin’s daughter, Kristina Prudencio, said things have not been easy since her mother was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis 17 years ago. Then, she was diagnosed with terminal bladder cancer last May.

“She just wanted to do something with her kids before she goes,” Prudencio said.

Hardin’s granddaughter, Ariel Davis — one of 11 to go on the trip — showed the beginning Thursday of all the smiles that are sure to come.

“I want to ride the rides and see Bugs Bunny, and spend some time with my family,” Ariel, 7, said.

Lechner said that’s something the Dream Foundation wants to happen.

“Our goal is to ensure that no adult whose life may pass prematurely due to illness must ever pass from this earth without realizing one final wish from the heart,” she said. “Mary’s dream is truly from the heart.”
