Volunteering is an amazing experience for the soul. It absolutely benefits everyone involved. The Auxiliary of Odessa Regional Medical Center has many opportunities to volunteer for anyone over the age of 18.

Perhaps the most prominent service is the popcorn. Several days a week you can walk in to ORMC and the first thing you smell is the delicious aroma of the buttery popcorn that makes your mouth water. The smiling, welcoming face selling the popcorn is one of the first you see. This volunteer is helping make the entire hospital environment friendlier, welcoming and a little less stressful. The popcorn sells for $0.50 or $1.00 per bag and is a substantial fundraiser for the Auxiliary of ORMC. It helps to honor the department wish list, scholarships and more. There are even some great doctors that have a weekly order for their staff!

The newest volunteer service area is the Loving Arms Program. It is an amazing service for babies who are almost ready to be released from the NICU. The volunteers get to hold the baby which helps with brain development, mental and emotional health and even helps the volunteer emotionally as well. The goal for the Loving Arms Program is to have a volunteer there every day for at least 2 hours a day to aid in the development of NICU babies. Each volunteer will have extra training in order to be safe and feel comfortable as well as to ensure their level of commitment.

The Auxiliary of ORMC has several services which include hospital and patient support, raising funds for the facility, assisting with events and community involvement. Volunteering has amazing health benefits. Volunteers have a sense of purpose, suffer less from depression, have a stronger empathy and even stronger social bonds. Love SwimmingBear, a volunteer for the Auxiliary of ORMC, says for her, volunteering is an absolute joy for her heart and soul and helps her focus on the positive aspects of her life.

The Auxiliary of ORMC provides a wish list for hospital departments as well as scholarships. The department wish list is monitored and voted on by an executive board, and has consisted of baby swings and gliders for the NICU, a jaundice meter for the newborn baby clinic and even hydraulic lifts for the engineering department, just to name a few. Scholarships include $1,000 per semester at a local college for a student entering the medical field. There is also the Bert and Dorothy Mann Scholarship named after long time volunteers for the Auxiliary of ORMC.

If you are interested and would like more information to volunteer, you can contact Terri Blackstone-West with the Marketing Department at 432-582-8796. You can also email her at tawest@iasishealthcare.com.
