Being diagnosed with congestive heart failure (CHF) can be overwhelming, confusing and incredibly scary. You have so many questions you desperately want answers to and may not be sure where to turn. Odessa Regional Medical Center (ORMC) is here to help. ORMC now has a new health information center for patients with CHF. It is an educational program not only for the patient, but the family as well.

The CHF program at ORMC provides extensive one-on-one education with a nurse who specializes in heart conditions. You will get help with understanding your diagnosis and assistance in how to manage your illness. The program also helps in teaching you how to improve your quality of life.

This free program helps the patient and loved ones understand what they can do collectively to manage the illness and lends support to everyone involved in the process. There are many emotional struggles when dealing with CHF, and the center is there to help make the struggle a little easier.

Hector Rivera, BSN, RN lists the method used by the CHF Program:

•  Screen Patients admitted to ORMC for CHF as primary or secondary        diagnosis

•  In house visit from heart failure nurse for education and management tools

•  Offer outpatient education and continued support for patient and family        at discharge

•  Follow up phone calls and education sessions

The ultimate goal for the program is to ensure peace of mind in educating the patient, decrease readmission and improve the quality of life. The center is a classroom type setting complete with a presentation and only lasts about an hour.  It is absolutely free of charge. You will go home with materials to guide you, and if you feel you would benefit from more sessions, they will set you up to continue your education in order to make you and your support system feel empowered to manage your illness.
