United Way organizing Earth Day weekend cleanup for Salvation Army

The United Way of Odessa is organizing its annual Day of Caring event for 2018, seeking volunteers to help beautify landscape at the Salvation Army location on 11th Street.

The ‘Clean the Green’ event is set for the morning of April 21, on the weekend of Earth Day.

The United Way of Odessa is seeking volunteers to gather as a team to clean trash and pull weeds on the site, and is looking for landscapers to help cut tree limbs, edge and mow grass, hedge shrubs, and cut back tree branches.

“This is a great help to us,” Salvation Army major Dolores Watts said.

“Our landscaping really needs some help. We’re very thankful to the United Way and the volunteers and the different people who are donating different items for this landscaping to be successful,” she added.

Cleanup will begin at 8:30 a.m. with plans to conclude by noon. Breakfast will be provided to volunteers by UTPB’s Chartwells, and lunch will be offered by Sonic at the end of the event.

Hand tools, trash bags and gloves will be provided for volunteers, via sponsoring Realtor Cindy Beason of Odessa.

The organizations are still searching for volunteers with landscaping equipment like mowers and tree trimming devices that they can use, said Summer Menchaca, community outreach coordinator with United Way of Odessa.

Watts noted the Salvation Army has to keep up with the landscaping across a large campus at its location, with an administration office building, a shelter building and a food inventory warehouse all on the block. For every dollar the Salvation Army saves by not having to pay a landscaper, it will then be able to pump that back into its charity projects, Watts said.

“The work hasn’t even begun but I’m just so thankful that people are interested in helping us just to keep Odessa beautiful,” she said.

Volunteers ages seven and up are invited to participate, and will also be eligible to win free entry tickets to Disney Land through the Disney Family Volunteering Reward program.
