One Orion High School senior has started her own virtual food drive to help the West Texas Food Bank, and is more than halfway to her goal of providing 10,000 meals to West Texans.
Halle Gault, 16, of Midland is graduating from Orion High School this May, and as part of her graduation, was required to complete a senior project. When given some options, she said she decided to do a project around community service.
“I wanted to do something that I really cared about and something that would make a big difference,” Gault said. “I think community service is just really cool, because I think that getting to be a part of something bigger than yourself is interesting and it’s a fun way to give back, and I think, especially in a place like Midland, it’s a big deal to help the people around you.”
When she thought about something that would make a difference, Gault said she thought about food.
“To me, that’s something that’s really important, because I just think everyone deserves to eat,” Gault said. “I just felt like the West Texas Food Bank was a really, really great place, and since it’s right here in my own community, I felt like that was a big deal.”
Gault has raised $1,400 so far, 60 percent of her $2,500 goal. WTFB states that every dollar donated will provide four meals.
“The new Virtual Food Drives are perfect for this kind of project because now instead of her having to collect and transport 10,000 cans of food, she can get her friends and neighbors to help provide 10,000 meals without ever leaving their homes,” WTFB Spokesman Craig Stoker said. “It simply could not be any easier.”
