School supplies giveaway slated for July 23, 24

More than 600 free back packs brimming with school supplies will be distributed during the City of Odessa Code Enforcement Department’s annual Back to School Party, 9 a.m. to noon Saturday at McKinney Park.

The back pack giveaway is part of a two-day event that kicks off Friday from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. with music, dancing, free treats and t-shirts, an outdoor movie, door prizes and plenty of games and activities, Code Enforcement Education Administrator Darlene Mays said.

Both days will also feature free COVID-19 vaccinations for youths and adults, a car show, and various activities, including access to the park’s sprayground area, Mays said.

“The whole reason for doing this is to bring joy to our children,” Mays said. “The season of COVID put a stop to it last year, but we’re back this year.

“A lot of parents can’t afford school supplies and clothing. This is our way of helping.”
The event is sponsored by Hannah Law Firm and Keep Odessa Beautiful.
