Noted Fort Worth poet Michelle Hartman will read from her work at a free 7 p.m. May 4 event sponsored by the Permian Basin Poetry Society.
Hartman, Loretta Diane Walker and Cynthia Ruby will read in the J. Conrad Dunagan Library’s Lecture Hall at the University of Texas Permian Basin.
PBPS Treasurer Kat Copeland said Hartman is a political science graduate of Texas Wesleyan University and a distinguished alumna of Tarrant County College whose poetry collections are titled “Wanton Disarray,” “First Night” and “Doors.”
“Michelle’s works are focused on at-risk youth, gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender people, the homeless, the hospitalized, the mentally ill, naturalists, environmentalists, the disabled, prisoners, teachers, teenagers and veterans,” Copeland said. “They are truth masked as humor.”
She said Walker, UTPB’s 2016 commencement speaker, will have her fourth poetry collection, “Ode to My Mother’s Voice and Other Questions,” published this summer by the Lamar University Literary Press.
Copeland said Ruby is a master of the Japanese verse form haiku. “Cynthia published the poetry collection ‘Rubies from the Heart,’” she said.
“She is also a painter, performance artist, film aficionado, musician and supporter of local and underground artists.”
