Pfluger announces 2022 Congressional Art Competition winners

Congressman August Pfluger (R-San Angelo) announced via press release on Friday the winners of the 2022 Congressional Art Competition for the 11th District of Texas.

The competition was open to all high school students, and the winning artwork will have in the U.S. Capitol in Washington, D.C. for one year. Submission themes were focused on Texas, American Patriotism, Agriculture or Energy.

First Place was awarded to Modesta Welborn from Trinity School of Midland for her watercolor painting “Traverse the Plains,” which depicts a peaceful longhorn along a fence line.

Second Place was awarded to Anastasiya Guajardo from Grape Creek High School for her piece titled “You Make Texas.”

Emily McWilliams from Trinity School of Midland won Third Place for her mixed media painting titled “Energy in Action.”

Honorable Mentions were awarded to Betsy Hammer from Trinity School of Midland for her painting titled “Texas Provides,” and Avary Blanco of Grape Creek High School for her painting called “Typical Texan.”

Pfluger stated in the press release: “Congratulations to the winners of the 2022 Congressional Art Competition, especially our first place winner Modesta Welborn. All of the entries were exceptionally creative, with many of the pieces highlighting the beauty and abundant natural resources of our great state. I hope this competition inspires all the entrants to continue pursuing their artistic talents, and I look forward to seeing Modesta’s painting hang in the U.S. Capitol to represent our great district.”
