Odessa driver injured, passenger killed in two-vehicle crash

A crash Friday night west of Odessa left one passenger dead and an Odessa driver injured after they were both ejected from the vehicle, according to a Texas Department of Public Safety news release.

Officers first responded to the crash on State Highway 302 around 8 p.m., the release detailed.

The release stated 20-year-old Cody Serviss of Odessa was driving east on State Highway 302 about eight miles west of Odessa with 21-year-old Austin Alexander of Gladewater in a 2017 Ford pick-up truck pulling a flatbed trailer when he collided with a 2001 Freightliner truck tractor from behind, driven by 49-year-old Miguel Ortiz Leyva of Odessa.

Serviss and Alexander were both ejected from the vehicle during the crash, and the truck they were in drove across the westbound lanes into an open field, the release said. Neither man was wearing seatbelt at the time of the accident, the release detailed.

Alexander was taken to Medical Center Hospital, where he was pronounced dead, and Serviss was taken to MCH with serious injuries, the release stated. Leyva was uninjured in the crash.
