Names of those in officer-involved shooting still not released

The Department of Public Safety, as of Tuesday afternoon, still had not released the names of the man or the three Odessa Police Department officers that were involved in a shooting late Sunday night.

The reported shooting happened at 8:30 p.m. in the 7200 block of Donatello Street in east Odessa, an OPD press release stated.

The man who was shot and killed reportedly refused to comply with officers’ commands. The man reportedly pointed a firearm at three OPD officers and the officers shot at the man and killed him.

DPS spokesperson Sgt. Oscar Villarreal said generally the Texas Rangers will investigate local law enforcement shootings.

Villarreal didn’t have any information when contacted Tuesday afternoon as he stated he hasn’t spoken with the lead Texas Ranger working on the case.

“I went over to visit with the Ranger today and to get the information and the Ranger working the case is not available right now,” Villarreal said.

More information will be released as soon as it becomes available.
