MPO reports fewer fatalities

A series of projects throughout Ector and Midland counties resulted in a 23% drop in fatal accidents along several roadways from 2019-2021, according to a study by the Permian Basin Metropolitan Planning Organization.

According to a news release from MPO Chairman Debi Hays, the study showed there was nearly a 31% drop in accidents overall during the same time frame.

Over the past couple of years the MPO has dedicated funding to projects in both counties and portions of Martin County, including those involving Loops 250 and 338, State Highway 191 and Interstate 20.

Traffic signals have been added, Loop 338 at 52nd/56th Street was regraded and reoriented, safety barricades were added along SH 191, Business 20, I-20, and Loop 250, according to the news release.

The MPO believes the conversion of the frontage roads along Loop 338 from two-way to one-way will also reduce crashes and save lives along the I-20 corridor and  additional projects are planned at the interchanges on Loop 250 at County Road 1150/County Road 60; Loop 338 at US 385 in north Odessa and Loop 338 at East Yukon.
