Man dies in connection to pedestrian-vehicle collision

A 61-year-old man from Rio Grande City died after he was struck by a vehicle that was attempting to avoid a previous wreck.

The reported incident happened at 6:17 a.m. March 31 near the intersection of N. Moss Avenue and Third Street, a Department of Public Safety press release stated.

Troopers say Darrin Lee Cody, 51, of Odessa was driving a 2019 Dodge Ram with passenger 19-year-old William Lee Cody of Odessa going southbound Moss Avenue.

Investigation showed the pedestrian, identified as 61-year-old Baldemar Zurita of Rio Grande City, was involved in a non-related collision, the press release. After this collision happened, the Ram was traveling south on Moss Avenue when the pedestrian walked into the southbound lanes.

Troopers say the Ram struck Zurita as the Ram attempted to avoid collided with a wrecked vehicle from the previous collision. Zurita was pronounced dead by Odessa Fire Rescue.
