LETTER TO THE EDITOR: Gun control not the answer

As usual after any and all mass shootings, the Democrats immediately demand more gun control laws, and especially, a ban on AR-15 style rifles. Well, here are some facts about that.

Since 1982, 1039 people have been killed in mass shootings. I could not find any definite numbers concerning AR-15s, but, according to FBI statistics, “assault rifles” were used in less than three percent of them.

Also, FBI statistics show that more people are killed every year by knives, and even fists and feet, than by rifles. That is including ALL rifles, of which AR types make an even smaller percentage.

Also, it is estimated that there are approximately 400 million guns (of all types) in the U.S. There are approximately 39,000 gun deaths annually in the U.S. Sixty-four percent are suicides; 1.2 percent are accidental; and thirty-four percent are homicides. The remainder are self-defense, and other justifiable, shootings.

Now, if only three percent of the deaths are by “assault rifles”, that makes only 1170 deaths by AR type rifles. Not exactly the death machines that the Democrats make them out to be!

According to Politifact, which is not exactly a conservative bunch, there are about 10 million AR type rifles in the U.S. That means only one in 300,000 are used in a murder. Most other estimates of the number of ARs put the number at 20 million, which would makes only one in 600,000 used in a murder.

Now, using the most common number, 400,000,000 guns to calculate the number of murders, there is only one murder per every 30,166 guns (of all types).

Now, in 2021. there were 42,915 automobile deaths; approximately 4,000 drowning deaths; 659,000 heart attack deaths; 609,640 cancer deaths; and 100,000 to 400,000 deaths due to obesity.

People, guns ARE NOT the problem!

Thanks,

Sandy Milner
