Fort Stockton ISD Board of Trustees approves calling TRE

FORT STOCKTON The Fort Stockton Independent School District Board of Trustees unanimously approved calling Proposition A, also known as a Tax Rate Election (TRE) for Nov. 5, 2024.

“I believe our district stakeholders care deeply about our students and the educators who work to improve all areas of the district. The school board and I consistently work to earn the trust and confidence of our school community. We hope that all stakeholders will take an objective look at the situation and vote based on the information they learn,” Superintendent Gabriel Zamora said in a news release.

The state of Texas has barely provided any additional funding for school districts since 2019 — even with inflation at record highs.

The release said this puts constraints on the district’s buying power to continue providing a safe, supportive, and secure environment in Fort Stockton ISD.

Without Prop A, FSISD would lose approximately $3 million from our local students’ maintenance and operation budget, this will lead to the inability to provide staff recruit and retain fall stipends as in the past and deeper program cuts.

Proposition A would provide new revenue that will impact every Fort Stockton ISD employee, student, and teacher. The measure would generate just over $1 million in additional annual funding, directed toward the district’s maintenance and operations budget.

If passed, the board will focus primarily on continuing to fund two areas including:

  • Prop A provides funds to recruit and retain staff.
  • Prop A provides funds to continue to provide teacher and staff stipends.

The estimated impact would be $23.07 per month, after homestead exemptions, for a home valued at $158,000, the average home value for a home in Fort Stockton ISD if voters approve Prop A.

“We will be reaching out to all registered voters in the district to provide factual information about Prop A,” Zamora said in the release. “We want our community to have all the facts so they can make an informed decision at the polls in October and November.”

More information about the Prop A projects, estimated impact, and voting locations will be available on the district website at www.FSISD.net/PropA
