Fatal crash leads to criminal indictment

An Ector County grand jury has indicted an Odessa woman in connection with a March crash that took the death of a 28-year-old pedestrian.

Christy Contreras, 25, was indicted on the offense of accident involving death. According to the indictment, Contreras “intentionally and knowingly” left the scene of the incident without rendering aid to Michael Joe King and without giving her name and vehicle and insurance information.

According to an Odessa Police report, officers received word of a pedestrian accident shortly after 7 a.m. March 22 at East 42nd Street and Grandview Avenue. Witnesses told officers King was standing in the left turn lane on 42nd Street when a Toyota Corolla traveling east hit King and then fled by turning north onto Grandview.

Police documents indicate cameras captured the car’s license plate, which led them to Contreras, who confessed.

Contreras is scheduled to be arraigned Monday.
