Expect detours for Midkiff and Cotton Flat roads

MIDLAND Motorists traveling north and south on Midkiff and Cotton Flat roads will see significant detours along Interstate 20, a Texas Department of Transportation press release stated.

Cotton Flat Road bridge demolition will begin Dec. 16. In preparation for this demolition the Cotton Flat Road bridge crossing I-20 will be closed Nov. 28.

During night time demolition, there will be closures of the main lanes with traffic diverted to the frontage roads, then shifting traffic back to the main lanes with night time service road closure to complete the demolition.

The Midkiff bridge will soon follow with closure and demolition early in 2023.

New bridges are being built at County Road 1250, Midkiff, and Cotton Flat roads. A $25 million federal BUILD grant is helping pay for part of the $68.5 million Cotton Flat project. The BUILD grant came with scheduling mandates which is why TxDOT has three overpass projects going on along the I-20 corridor in Midland County, a news release said.

FNF Construction was awarded the Cotton Flat bridge project with a bid of approximately $68.5 million. Project completion is expected in the spring of 2025.

James Construction was awarded the Midkiff bridge project with a bid of approximately $36.3 million. The project is scheduled for completion in late 2023.

When both bridges are removed, southbound travelers on both Midkiff and Cotton Flat will detour on the westbound service road to Loop 250, then return on the eastbound service road to destinations on the south side of I-20. Northbound travelers will detour on the eastbound service road to SH 349, then return on the westbound service road to destinations north of I-20.

Motorists are reminded that state law requires them to obey warning signs and traffic control devices.
