Director Brian Serrano is leading both a summer camp and a summer show this year at the Permian Playhouse.

The all kid cast will perform the classic Aladdin Jr. Serrano, via email, said the summer camp is a production camp that features snacks and games and crafts but that it revolves around producing the show, which opens June 15 at the Playhouse, 310 W. 42nd St.

While “Aladdin” is a much beloved Disney cartoon and has been staged on Broadway since 2011, this local production will be all their own.

“The children get inspiration from the cartoon and Broadway version,” Serrano said. “However we coach them to make all parts their own.”

Serrano said he serves as both camp and show director and that they allowed last year’s camp show audience to vote and they picked “Aladdin.”

He’s been part of the summer camp for three years.

“I love it. Permian Playhouse board of directors and volunteer staff are taking it to a whole new level and I am blessed to be along for the ride,” he said.

He encourages people to try theater at least once. “Because if not they could be missing something that could change their lives.”

He said some treasures need some digging up and that he finds a cast of young people to be a blessing in so many ways. “They are more malleable. They are far more energetic. They learn fast and are happy to see each other succeed.”

I am the camp director and the show director as well.
