Noyce program has two scholarships available at Sul Ross State

ALPINE Two scholarships worth up to $48,000 are available to Sul Ross State University students who already have 60 credit hours and are seeking teacher certification with a major in biology, geology or math, a press release stated.

The funds are available through Noyce Scholars in la Frontera, which aims to increase the pipeline of highly-qualified STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) teachers by 10 percent to serve in high need school districts on the Texas-Mexico border.

The Robert Noyce Teacher Scholarship Program provides funding to institutions of higher education to provide scholarships, stipends, and programmatic support to recruit and prepare STEM majors and professionals to become K-12 teachers.

In addition to increasing the number of teachers in border areas, the Noyce program aims to increase their confidence while encouraging faculty to integrate STEM in content courses. It also helps to improve culturally responsive teaching and the practices of those delivering STEM courses in high needs schools and to bilingual students.

Alpine campus students can use the scholarship for residential and meal expenses in addition to tuition. The application deadline is Aug. 18.
