Youngsters at Crockett Middle School are trying their hand at cake decorating as part of a recently formed club.

The Cake Decorating Club is headed by sixth-grade science teacher Hilda Galindo. The club meets on Tuesday after school and there were 18 students in a classroom recently and she thinks it will probably grow.

The group is open to all grades and it is one of several that have begun at Crockett, or will soon start, such as guitar, Spanish and chess.

Galindo settled on cake decorating figuring it could help them one day.

“Next week I’m bringing cupcakes for everyone so we can put it on the cupcake,” Galindo said.

Students practice by following designs on paper covered in plastic sleeves. Galindo provides all the supplies, cake and frosting.

“Every week we do something different. This is our third class and we are already ready to put our first things on the cupcake,” Galindo said.

Galindo herself has been decorating cakes since 1982.

In middle school, she was in home economics and cake decorating was part of it.

“… I started from there, and in 1985 I did my first quinceañera cake and from there I’m still doing it, but my daughter is the one that is more taking care of the cakes now …,” Galindo added.

Maya Arrieta, an 11-year-old sixth grader, said she really likes drawing and designs.

“I would think that decorating a cake or something like that would really make me improve in drawing, too,” Arrieta said.

“We get to spend time with our friends, but also focusing on how to decorate and eat frosting,” she added.

Eleven-year-old sixth-grader Charli Rayos said she got into decorating because her sister is a very good baker.

“She has been decorating cakes for a while and I got interested in that so I’m just trying to follow my sister’s steps,” Rayos said.

She said she is now able to hold the frosting bag steadier.

Twelve-year-old seventh grader Luisa Parra said her aunt makes cakes and decorates them which seems cool and she wanted to do the same thing.

Parra says the club is fun so far. “I really like being creative and decorating stuff,” she added.

Za’Bree Soto, a 13-year-old seventh grader, said she wanted to spend more time with her little brother, who is also in the club.

“And I wanted to learn something new,” Soto said.
