ECSO identifies suspected gunman; victim remains in good condition

A woman who was shot twice in the back of the head Wednesday in south Odessa remained in good condition Thursday.
The shooting happened at 2:14 p.m. Wednesday at 3820 Einstein Avenue. When deputies arrived, they located a vehicle at the scene with the windows shot out. Maria Calzadillas, 53, reportedly had two gunshot wounds to the back of her head and she was transported to Medical Center Hospital, an Ector County Sheriff’s Office affidavit stated.
Sheriff Mike Griffis said on Wednesday the shooting victim was able to positively identify the gunman who was arrested on scene.
Melissa Sierra, 52, was charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, a second-degree felony. Sierra admitted to firing at least one shot from a 12-gauge shotgun in the direction of Calzadillas, the affidavit detailed.
The sheriff’s office stated in a news release the 9-1-1 call was received by ECSO dispatch from the shooting victim’s daughter.
When Calzadillas was transported to the hospital Wednesday, officials said she was in stable condition. Susan Thornton, community relations coordinator for MCH, said over the phone Thursday morning Calzadillas was listed in good condition.
Sierra has one bond totaling $50,000 and was still in custody as of Thursday morning, jail records show.
