Woman charged with DWI with child passenger

Police charged a woman Thursday after she reportedly drove intoxicated while her 9-year-old son was in the backseat.

Officers pulled over the suspect, 28-year-old Amy Ramirez, after seeing her driving a red 2008 Dodge Caliber south in the 700 block of North Dixie Boulevard with an expired registration, an Odessa Police Department news release stated.

During the traffic stop, officers could smell a strong odor of marijuana coming from the vehicle and found Ramirez to be in possession of marijuana and an open container of an alcoholic beverage, the release detailed. Her 9-year-old son was also found in the backseat of the vehicle.

Ramirez was arrested after failing field sobriety tests and charged with driving while intoxicated with a child passenger, a state jail felony and possession of marijuana, driving while license invalid with prior convictions, no proof of insurance with prior convictions, class B misdemeanors, as well as for an outstanding warrant.

The 9-year-old child was released to a family member by Child Protective Services, the release stated.

Jail records show Ramirez was taken to the Ector County Detention Center Friday and has five bonds totaling $12,000.
