Sex offender charged with failing to report Facebook account

The Odessa Police Department charged a sex offender Monday after he reportedly failed to notify officers he had created a Facebook account, according to an OPD news release.

Police charged 46-year-old Charles Mello with failure to comply with registration requirements, a second-degree felony, the release stated.

The Texas Sex Offender Registry shows Mello was convicted of two counts of indecency with a child, sexual contact, in 1997.

Registered sex offenders are required by law to report all online identifiers to OPD within a week, the release detailed.

Detectives first became aware of Mello’s Facebook account Monday, the release said, which showed to have posts as far back as May 2017, and he had failed to report the account to OPD within a week.

Jail records show Mello was taken to the Ector County Detention Center Tuesday and has a bond of $50,000.
